Individual consultation – what is it?

The classic professional approach includes empathy, authenticity and unconditional positive regard on the part of the professional. At the same time, the client's honesty and openness also support the process, in which they sense the helper's care and support. It is important that the professional is a stable support for the client, able to guide them through the self-reflective process of the consultation, providing the client with a kind of map.

If this is combined with appropriate energy on the professional's side, the patient does not have to find the resources and mobilise their usually scarce reserves alone – their task becomes easier. It is also essential that the professional is able to define the problem they are working on. At the end of a successful treatment, a mature helper knows how to tie up the loose ends at the right time.

What happens during an individual consultation?

We talk and consult, but we do not just chat to pass the time. External communication is a tool to start internal communication, with the help of which we find other perspectives, reach understanding, and order begins to form in our personality.

A personality placed on new foundations works like a sports car: it can deliver high performance when needed, yet it is safe and comfortable to drive. Meanwhile the car does not smoke, it rolls softly along the multi-lane motorways of life, and it is pleasant to travel with. This change does not require throwing away our existing "car"; often it is enough to adjust its workings here and there, and to live our lives more fully at a more organised level of understanding.

With the above I wanted to dispel the misconception that only "crazy" people go to a psychologist, and also the idea that "whoever cannot handle their own life problems is not fit for this world". For me, turning to a professional is a sign of high standards, whether it is plumbing or dealing with a psychological problem. I once bungled a dripping tap at home myself; lacking tools, the solution was a clumsy fix with a jar rubber band. A professional then solved the problem perfectly in a few minutes.
